Spanish 1 Spanish 1 is a year-long course that can be taken in either 7th or 8th grade. It is a beginning language-learning course for which students can earn up to one high school graduation credit. In Spanish 1, students learn basic conversational skills, and how to read and write in Spanish. A variety of vocabulary is introduced to students that include themes such as daily life at home and at school, traveling in a city, food and restaurants, family, sports/leisure, weather, and time. The goal of Spanish 1 is for students to gain skills and confidence in their comprehension of the language and their general knowledge of Latin culture. The curriculum for Spanish 1 is based off of the textbook, Navegando 1 (EMC Paradigm, 2005).
Spanish 2 Spanish 2 is a year-long course that is offered to 8th graders who have successfully completed Spanish 1. Students may earn up to one high school graduation credit for Spanish 2. In Spanish 2, students continue to build upon language skills learned in Spanish 1, including speaking, reading, writing, and listening. Students learn to speak and write in various tenses (past, present, future, conditional). Vocabulary themes include travel, daily routines, places in a city, animals and theme parks, foods and restaurants, the media, and sports. Students will read more extensively and gain new specific vocabulary. The goal of the course if for students to feel more comfortable with verb conjugations and to increase their comprehension of the language, its people, and their cultures. The curriculum for Spanish 2 follows the textbook, Navegando 2 (EMC Paradigm, 2005).
